Shipwreck exposed on Ponte Vedra Beach.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Carol Caruso likes to walk on Ponte Vedra Beach, but she hadn't been out in a few weeks. When she walked along the shore Tuesday, she saw something big. With her hands held out wide, she said, "This is what I found at low tide!" It appears to be the skeleton of a ship, right where the waves hit the beach. "I've been looking at it for two years," Caruso explained but she's never seen so much of it coming out of the sand. "Generally it's just that point, literally that point sticking up and that's it. So I thought this had to be something special," she beamed. The ribs of the ship appear to be jutting out from the beach above the waves. Caruso estimates the shipwreck is about 75 feet long. Archaeologists with the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (or L.A.M.P.) in St. Augustine have been out to the site before, studying it. However, after seeing pictures of the ship Wednesday, archaeologist Brenden Burke said he and the L.A.M.P. team have never seen so much of the ship exposed. Burke explained that parts of the ship have been revealed three times in the last six years. Caruso remembers only seeing portions of the ship "at low tide and only during the fall and winter. During the summer, it was totally covered." When the shipwreck is covered by sand and waves, the job is a bit more tricky for marine archaeologists. Burke believes it's a steel frame vessel, but they don't know what ship it is. Caruso gazed at the ship, "It is a mystery! I'd love to know how long it's been here." After seeing photos from Caruso and from First Coast News, Burke said a crew from L.A.M.P. will be out to study the relic soon. Maybe they'll uncover a clue to help solve the mystery of the ship that is no longer completely covered by the sand.

Beautiful Pricey Ponte Vedra Beach Home Burns!

PONTE VEDRA, Fla. - A home in a pricey area of Ponte Vedra sustained significant fire damage late Thursday night.

St. Johns County Fire Rescue responded to a residential fire in the 200 block of Oak Hammock Drive at approximately 11:30 p.m.

When crews arrived on scene, heavy fire was showing from the roof of the home. According to SJCFR, the fire was initially isolated to the attic space of the home and rapidly spread throughout the home.

Both adult occupants of the home were able to get out of the home safely and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation and an official damage estimate is unavailable at this time.

A Ponte Vedra Woman also an Archie Comics Artist has passed away.

Janice Valleau Winkleman, a Ponte Vedra resident and comic book artist who worked on classics including the Archie Comics franchise, broke into the industry at a time when few women drew comics. She died Sunday at age 90 after a time in hospice.

Winkleman illustrated Smash Comics in New York City during the 1930s, said her son Daniel Winkleman, a Jacksonville Beach resident.

Her drawings appeared in “Betty and Veronica,” “Young King Cole” and “Toni Gayle” comics, among many others.

A loving and reserved woman, her children said Winkleman didn’t brag about her success, even though she helped create books that became staples of countless children’s bedside tables.

“To me, I’m proud of her for being able to do that,” her son said. “She made more than most men made, even in New York City in the ’50s.”

Her daughter, Ellie Winkleman, of New York City, grew up reading the comics that her mother illustrated.

“She was very modest about her accomplishments, for sure,” she said. “I used to read Archie Comics growing up, and it wasn’t until I was 8 or 9 … that she told me she actually drew them.”

Winkleman was born on Nov. 6, 1923, and raised in New Jersey suburbs just outside New York City.

She met her husband, Edward, on an evening cruise along the banks of the city.

“As the story has it, he was talking with people and she walked up,” Daniel Winkleman said, “and he said, ‘I’d like for you to meet my wife,’ and that was the first time he’d ever met her.”

They’d laugh the joke off that night, but within about six months they were engaged, Ellie Winkleman said. Over the course of their 61-year marriage, they’d have four children: Daniel, Dale, Ellie and Steve.

They relocated to Pittsburgh in the mid-1950s when the steel company her husband worked for was bought out by the United States Steel Corp., said her daughter, Dale Campbell, of Orlando.

She continued to draw comics for a while but stopped around the early 1960s, spending her time raising her children.

But she remained an active artist and practiced watercolor, painting personalized Christmas cards when her children were young and crafting intricate waterfront settings during her retirement years in Florida, Dale Campbell said.

Winkleman and her husband moved to Ponte Vedra in 1983 for retirement, often entering her watercolor paintings in local competitions. He died about four years ago, their children said.

She is survived by three of her four children, Ellie Winkleman, Dale Campbell and Daniel Winkleman, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be private, and her family asks for any donations to be made to Community Hospice’s Anne and Donald McGraw Center for Caring.

New Arbor Terrace Ponte Vedra project.

Construction is slated to begin on a 64-bed memory care center on Palm Valley Road in Ponte Vedra Beach in spring 2014.

The St. Johns County Planning and Zoning Agency recently approved the Arbor Terrace Ponte Vedra project, which will include a 38,000 square-foot specialized living facility for people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

The center will cost approximately $11 million and create 44 jobs.

The facility will be located on a 2.66-acre property at 5125 Palm Valley Rd., which Whitehall Realty Partners is in the process of buying from Ponte Vedra Beach resident Jack Billingsley.

Whitehall Realty managing partner G. John Carey said he expects to close on the property soon. For the past few years, Billingsley has allowed the land to be used as a community garden.

Since the assisted care facility will serve only people with dementia, Carey said it will have unique design aspects compared to typical memory care centers, which usually occupy a separate wing or area within larger assisted living communities.

The perimeter will be secure, and residents will live in four “neighborhoods” that connect to a large common inner courtyard, giving them a degree of freedom. The four neighborhoods of 16 units will each have their own community great rooms, dining rooms and kitchens. Residents will reside with others who are in similar stages of the disease, with the idea of creating a home-like experience for improved care, Carey said.

The facility will be managed by The Arbor Co., which runs about 20 similar facilities around the country, mostly in the Southeast. Whitehall opened a 54-bed memory care center in Ortega two months ago that is identical in design to the one planned for Ponte Vedra Beach, and is also managed by Arbor.

“We worked with the St. Johns Council on Aging to identify a need in the area, and also did our own demographic studies,” Carey said. “There is a large need.”
